The Pastor's Letter

August Memory Verse

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21

COMPositions...

The Pastor's Monthly Letter

In February of this year, I was contacted by my home church in Pennsylvania regarding our availability and interest in a ministry position. We graciously declined and thought little more about it. Then on March 29th as Kathy and I were eating dinner, one of us (she says it was me, I think it was her) speculated that God might be calling us to go to Conneautville. So, on March 31, we responded by sending a resume and letter.

Unbeknownst to me their Associate Minister, Rich Jones, applied for the ministry position at the same time. Now, after 2 years without a response, they had two viable candidates, both deeply connected to the church. In speaking with Rich, we concluded it seemed like the Lord was indicating He didn’t want one or the other, but rather He wanted both of us! Rich decided to withdraw him name if I would continue, which we did. There are a number of people with whom I consult for accountability and confirmation when facing a major decision, every one of them agreed that it was a perfect fit and situation. After several phone conference calls, two on site visits, and much prayer, we decided to accept the unanimous call.

On Sunday, June 8th, we made an announcement to the LCC family and initiated the 30 day transition period. We were on vacation from June 23 – 29, our last Sunday at LCC will be July 13th. Although this may seem abrupt or premature to some, we are confident that God is in it and will use this change to positively advance His kingdom.

I made the following observations at our last Men’s Monthly Prayer breakfast:

1. Sometimes the Lord shakes things up in order to keep us fresh. We easily become comfortable and complacent, so, often He brings change to stimulate growth.

2. Sometimes the Lord shakes things up in order to make room for others. If we always do what we have always done, there is no place for new or younger people to serve and we create a bottleneck that restricts growth.

3. And, sometimes the Lord shakes things up in order to keep us focused on Him. It is not uncommon for us to idolize those who have significant impact on our lives. We may elevate them to a position of authority or influence that can be spiritually unhealthy, even detrimental to the cause of Christ. So, God “shuffles the deck” to keep us fresh and focused.

4. As I reflect on my life and ministry here, it becomes obvious that the success of our time together is directly related to the depth of our relationship. If our contact was limited to Sunday mornings, the impact was marginal. But for those who opened their homes and invited us to share life together, the impact was huge and reciprocal.

So, my challenge to each of you is twofold: FIRST, embrace the change! See that God is working to strengthen our faith and extend His Kingdom. SECOND, reach out to others! Take the initiative to invest and be vulnerable with the people God brings across your path.

My family and I have truly enjoyed a wonderful 2½ year ministry here at Londonderry Christian Church and will take with us many fond memories. I sincerely appreciate the support of the Elders and the kind words many of you have expressed to my family and I during the last several weeks.

“Finally, brothers, goodbye. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.” ― II Corinthians 13:11
